Artist’s Burnt Paintings Included in Retrospective
Like artists before him, Phil Volk uses some of the most expensive mediums of his day. The final solution of many of his recent works is created using the ever precious medium of petroleum. The paintings are doused with items such as gasoline and lighter fluid, and then set ablaze. The result is a smoky ruin or shell of its original image often to the point of complete destruction. The paintings are a glutoness use of petroleum and the process is a symbol of the carefree abuse of the environment that is prevalent in today’s society. One other point of interest is that Phil has actually fought for his medium; he is a veteran of the first gulf war. You can see his work at an exhibit titled “Monstro Retrospective: Ten Years of Phil Volk Paintings” starting October 11th at the Dow Art Gallery (www.dowart.com) in Fort Worth.

Phil has been featured in the Dallas/Fort Worth media in outlets such as the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the CBS 11 News, Fox 4 News, and is also an artist featured in the Veria Networks episode "The Spirit of Solace" in "The Art of Living Gallery". He wrote the art philosophy titled "Dual Existence Creationism and the Blankist Quasi-Manifesto" in 1997, and it is still the basis of his creative output today. He was a finalist for the prestigious Hunting Art Prize in 2007.

Dow Art Galleries was established in 1935 by Percy A. Dow, and is now one of Fort Worth’s premier art galleries known for exceptional restoration and fine artwork.
